Clare, John
(13 jul. 1793, Helpston, cerca de Peterborough, Northamptonshire, Inglaterra–20 may. 1864, Northampton, Northamptonshire).

Poeta británico. Clare creció en la extrema pobreza de una zona rural con poco acceso a los libros. Sin embargo, poseía una prodigiosa memoria que le permitió aprender baladas populares. Su obra Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery [Poemas descriptivos de la vida y de los paisajes rurales] (1820) le significó un corto período de celebridad, ya que los volúmenes que le siguieron, entre ellos The Shepherd's Calendar [El calendario del pastor] (1827) y The Rural Muse [La musa rural] (1835), se vendieron muy poco. Sumido en la más extrema pobreza y débil de salud, comenzó a sufrir alucinaciones, por lo que debió ser internado en un manicomio en 1837. Después de cuatro años de encierro, logró escaparse, pero por poco tiempo; declarado enfermo mental, pasó sus últimos 23 años en otro manicomio, donde escribió algunas de sus poesías líricas más lúcidas.
